Prepping for Summer Camps

I know, it’s only February. However, I actually had to submit the camp info to the schools who are hosting them back in the beginning of January. So let the prep time begin! Here’s what is involved…

After securing locations, I come up with a week’s worth of projects for each camp as well as age requirements, dates, etc. Did you know that each of my camps will have different art pieces so artists can attend more than one? I always love sharing my love of art and want the kids to learn a lot too 🙂

From there, I start planning out the art projects by creating samples and supply lists which I am currently working on. For the next few months, I finish up these parts of the lessons and start ordering supplies, always planning for a few extras just in case.

One week out from camp, I start packing up boxes labeled for each day’s projects plus general art supplies like paint, Sharpies, scissors, etc. This takes approximately 6-8 hours. Hey, I like to be as organized as possible. 🙂

Generally speaking, art classes are more of a controlled chaos, but day 1 of camp is always more chaotic. It’s time for the kids to learn about me and for me to learn about the kids. Sometime I will have to shift things around a bit to adapt to my audience. Good thing most artists are great at improvising.

By the end of the week, the kids will have taken home lots of artwork. My goals are to teach them to creatively express themselves, nothing is ever perfect (so no feelings of frustration – one of my class rules), learn about new art mediums and techniques, and to think outside the box.
